“That’s a big step” – everyone I talked to after I told them I was moving in with my boyfriend.
In my opinion, it was a big, awesome, super fun, exciting, loving leap not some hesitant, scary “big step”. I’m writing this just after our 4 year anniversary so I’ll admit I’ve got the love bug I am not kidding when I say that moving in with my boyfriend has been one of the best decisions I think I’ve made to date. Why? Well, there are probably at least 30 reasons but I’m narrowing it down to a few for you in just a minute.
We’d been together for a while before we moved into our townhouse in Apex, NC. After meeting in college, being friends for a few years, and dating for another few, it was finally time. On top of that timeline, all of his college friends were finally ready to leave the party house and mix it up. With all of that going for us we started talking about moving in together. Most of our friends we’re about to do the same thing or already had. I have to admit, I was a little nervous so we asked some friends how it was going. Some answers were great – “its fun” “its like living with your best friend”. Others, not so much – “Its hard” Its not easy” “You learn a lot about each other and not all things you’ll like”
With the confidence in us though, we jumped into it. I can say now that I don’t know what those “it was tough” people we’re talking about. It is easy and exciting and new and fun. If you’re thinking about it, go for it!! I LOVE living with my best friend. Maybe its because we waited long enough or because we have so much space in our place, but I think it is just because we are a pretty darn perfect match. Will it get tougher? I’m really not sure. But, for now, we are just going to keep yelling “honey, I’m home” cheesing as big as we can when we come home to each others faces. Back to the details though! These are the top 3 reasons I’ve loved moving in with him.
I have someone to talk to, like, all the time.
I lived alone for 3 years before we moved into our place. Don’t get me wrong, I love some alone time. I’m an only child with divorced parents that spent a solid amount of time with me, myself and I. Now that I have gotten used to having someone to talk to when I walk in the door from a tough day, there’s no going back. Don’t you get tired of talking to the same person? Absolutely not. I don’t care how long you’ve been dating someone, there is still so much to talk about. I am constantly asking him if we’re going to run out of things to talk to each other about. His response, with absolutely no hesitation every time – of course not. And 5 months in, I feel like we’ve got billions of topics left. In fact, when we leave the house for work in the morning, he usually gets a call from me because something has happened with those 5 minutes that I absolutely must tell him (I talk a lot y’all).
Opinions are there when I need them on whatever it may be from what pillows to put on the guest bed to how do I handle this tough conversation with my boss. He’s even there to be my Kanye when I just can’t find a good outfit (find yourself a guy who can pick out a badass look y’all. no joke). He’s always been there for me and was available to talk or text but living together is next level and it’s awesome.
It’s a true test
Our house is a mess, we are probably each wearing our last pair of clean underwear, and there are still a couple unpacked boxes in the basement. This is life y’all. Living together for this first year is just a peek into what life could look like for, well, the rest of it. We’ve all heard the cliche “you live and you learn” about a million times. You live with them and you learn how they work. You learn that his chore of choice is the dishes, you learn that he doesn’t put the toilet seat down. He learns that you wait until the laundry pile is so big it is toppling over before even considering to put a load in.
But you also learn that there’s someone there for you when you need them, on good days and bad. I’ve learned that he’ll surprise me when I least expect it and that he likes a honey do list. If there is a bag of doritos in the pantry, it will be gone within 3 days it’s opened. He loves to dance and knows he can make me smile by shakin’ it. I haven’t asked him lately, but I sure hope he’s learned a few good things about me too. Sure, you argue. But it is about the little stuff, and guess what? storming around the house mad gets old after about an hour so you work it out! This is one test I’m pretty confident we’re going to pass. Probably with an A+.
The adventure doesn’t ever stop
If you know us at all, you know that adventuring is our thing (exhibit A – the keychain in the photo). Weekend getaways, snowboarding trips, beach weeks. That is our thing. #adventuresofkyleandsara, though, has become our life. Now, instead of just using it as a hashtag on vacation photos, I can use on a goofy selfie from a Thursday night on the couch. Our day to day is an adventure when we’re doing it all side by side.
I still crave adventure and exploring new places with him but I’m also more content spending a Friday night at home than I’ve ever been. Walking into our adorable little town for our Sunday morning coffee is our weekly adventure and one that I hope we keep up. Going to the grocery store for a week of groceries is not one of my favorites but it is 20x more fun with him pushing the cart. One of our favorites lately, the adventure of learning to cook something other than tacos and alfredo. Whatever you’re little day to day to do’s are, they become an adventure. That isn’t to say that they can’t be when you’re on your own, but everybody loves a little company, right?
I absolutely love that my day to day life has just added another layer of fun and spontaneity thanks to having him be a part of home. The week we got our keys, I gave kyle (and myself) one of these hashtag keychains. They are the perfect little reminder of this giant adventure we’re on. Seeing that every time I have to get in the house puts a smile on my face, and hopefully his too!
So, that’s how my first 5 months living with my boyfriend have gone. Can you tell I’m about as happy as I could be?
To you, Bub
Moving in together has been our greatest, and my favorite, adventure yet! I love you so much! Happy Anniversary.
I LOVE that key chain!! Too freaking cute. Also, you said that you lived by yourself for quite a while. I’ve lived alone for like 8+ years now and honestly I am terrifed to start seriously dating someone/get married because I’m like…. can I live with someone?! haha
Happy Anniversary! Enjoy the ride ?
