This weekend, I took him on another 24 hour getaway. 24 hours seems short, I know. But y’all – It’s not! We’ve found one day to be just enough time to relax, enjoy, and explore little cities. This weekend’s destination: The Wherehouse Art Hotel in Winston Salem, NC. I lived just 20 minutes away from Winston a couple years ago and somehow never ventured across the city line! This trip was the perfect introduction to the Camel City (p.s. still not sure why it is called that but I’m going with it).
While browsing on AirBnB, one of my favorite pass times – and by pass times I mean I browse airbnb with every spare minute I can find including between meetings at work occasionally (shh, don’t tell). Anyways, while looking around one afternoon I found the perfect quirky, artsy, beyond unique loft that I just couldn’t get out of my head anddd BOOKED IT. If I have learned anything from my airbnb browsing, it is that the second I fall in love with a place I just have to pick a date and go for it. I’m giving you an assignment for when you’re done reading this – Get on Airbnb, fall in love with an adorable tiny house, a modern loft, or a homey cabin and BOOK IT right then and there.
So back to our find – We checked in and got a tour from the host, Haydee, of every little quirk that came with the place – Locks that required a special touch and turn to work, homemade light fixtures with hidden switches and a television with a remote that uses the mute button as power and info buttons for volume. I felt like I should be taking notes during the tour but we figured it all out and every one of these little missteps made the place that much more lovable. This loft was our perfect little home even if only for a 24 hours. You know how a lazy night in a hotel room is just about the best thing in the world – a night in the loft was even better.
I’m not going to lie and tell you that some of the art didn’t give me nightmares, because there were a few pieces that were a tad creepy but the cool far outweighed the creep. When I add pieces or art, photos, chochkies, and plants to my home, I found myself feeling like I added a bit of character to the place. This place was the definition of character.
Ok, but besides the apartment that we spend most of our time in, we found out that this little city of Winston Salem is absolutely busting with potential! The locals seem friendly, active, and beyond creative. Murals adorned walls around every corner we turned! We even found the coolest old warehouse that seems to have become local graffiti artists favorite canvas! Breweries have popped up on every other block and there was no shortage of trendy restaurants. Check out a few of our favorite stops – The Warehouse, Krankies Coffee (go for the iced vanilla latte – it is heaven in a glass), insane milkshakes at Burger Batch just begging to make an appearance on your instagram feed, and delicious beer at Wisman Brewing!
