Ok, this one is going to go a little differently. I’m currently taking my lunch break browsing through Pinterest for hairstyles because I need a new look! New hair, new me. That is what I’m going for. I’m usually a pretty ambitious, driven little thing but the past week or so has been a complete dud! I’m talking get home, sit on the couch and think about working out, think about sewing, think about writing and stop right there. Nothing gets past thinking about it and my ass doesn’t leave the couch. So I’m going for a little hair makeover and hoping that a little change in how I look and feel will make a gigantic change in how I act! Think it will work? I’m going to give you guys a little insight into what’s going on in my head before and after and we’ll find out together.
Why do you care? Well, I know we all slump once in a while so I’m hoping to show you how my “get off your ass” strategy takes my brain on a 180 degree ride to the other side where shit gets done, I’m happy, and all is good!
Before the new hair
So what’s with the slump? I’m not here to throw a pity party for myself! I take full responsibility for lacking the motivation to just stand up and start hustling. But haven’t we all gotten to that place where our to do list is just so long that we ignore the entire thing! That is what’s going on here. My day job is wearing me out, I want to workout twice a day, I want to blog, and I want to open my etsy shop. I’d also love to catch up on my netflix shows, my new obsession the amazing race, and some reading. I go through phases like this every few months where my ambition reaches an all time high and then poof it’s gone. And I hate it! We all do.
I find it impossible to run at 100% constantly. Instead I run at about 90% until I hit one of these little valleys where I dip to about a 30%. That 90% level is when I am hustling. That 30% is when you’ll find me snuggled with a pepperoni pie on the ottoman. You’re motivation might not vary quite as much as that but take a minute to think about it! Are you always up, always running at half full, or a bumpy roller coaster ride like me. Whether you’re up on motivation mountain or down on your couch in the valley like me, It’s always helpful to know that there are ways to get up there or stay up there and it doesn’t have to be a treacherous hike!
The strategy – New hair, New me
For me, it usually just takes a shift in my mindset to get me going again. This time, that means a new haircut. I hate to sound superficial or materialistic as I head to the bougie salon to get a cut and color but it is things like feeling good about how I look that put a smile on my face are rejuvenate the drive in me! For you, it could be grabbing a smoothie for dinner tonight instead of a pizza, or changing your playlist from “All the feels” to “Good Vibes” (my Spotify fave) on a destination-less drive. Whatever it is, it can be small. You need to make a choice to do something for you. That doesn’t mean giving yourself time on the couch to watch gossip girl. Get up, get out and do something for yourself. You got this, girl. Does it always work? No. That is ok! But don’t stop there…try something else. I’m writing all of this before I get get my hair did but fingers crossed that this is my slump escape but stay tuned y’all.
Also – for some explanation on just how bad I need this haircut besides the slump evacuation, This my current look in words – air dried, no style, no dye, frump mcgump.
New Hair, New Me?
Ok, Stopped by plum hair atelier in Raleigh with my ideal hairstyle on my phone as I usually do yesterday. We know I walked in a little frumpy, but how did I leave? Feeling good! It worked. Do I look that different? Absolutely not (We all know you don’t walk out looking like the picture you showed the stylist, right?) Do I feel that different? yes! Now, don’t get me wrong. My life isn’t changed. I still didn’t wake up for my 6 am workout this morning but when I did roll over at 7, I was ready to get up and kick some ass. Stopped by starbucks for my iced coffee and strolled into the office to get it done. Since I’ve sat down, I’ve been more productive that I think I had been in the 3 days before. So now that I feel like I’m doing the most here at the office, maybe I will wake up for my workout Monday morning and things will just keep going up. The new do has helped me start my trek out of this stupid, lazy valley.
That one little pick-me-up, a haircut, was all I needed to give my self that get going boost. Maybe a haircut isn’t what does it for you, but there is something! Get up, get out and do something for yourself. Find a fresh start of some kind and climb that mountain back to your top potential. Slump be gone. You’ve got this dude!
